Who Are We
-
Provide an inclusive community space to explore creative expression through the lens of Burlesque and compassionate self-discovery. We are commit to contributing an environment of growth and support for all our members. We acknowledge the history and communities within the Burlesque space, including the LGBTQIA+ and s/w communities, and their contributions to the art.
-
Kindness - we have a zero tolerance policy towards bullying of any kind.
Respect - through honesty, communication and willing participation.
Participation - classes are for dancing, leave drama at the door.
Practice - instructors and choreographers are artists too, please respect their work by practicing between classes.
Consent - remember consent is sexy, ask before touching.
Community - we are more than a dance class; we build community through collaboration, not competition.
Growth - we encourage curiosity, exploration and development .
Safety - we are committed to safe dance practices through technical proficiency.
Support - we want our members to succeed. We build each other up and foster strengths.
-
Communication - we encourage open communication with our instructors. We are committed to a supportive environment and want to hear your questions and concerns.
Practice - We ask members to practice the weekly choreography outside of class to keep pace with the class. If a member is unable to attend a class, we ask that you utilise the rehearsal videos to catch up and keep pace with the class.
Performing - we love to see the enthusiasm for our work and welcome students to attend as many courses as they want to. We aim to put together class watch parties twice per year and one major Showcase annually. Annual Showcases will be a selection of acts from the preceding twelve months, and those acts will be offered as 3 week Performance Intensives to polish and refine so our members shine their brightest. To support this members will be capped at 2 acts per showcase. Just because we can do the hard things, does not mean we have to suffer in hardship.
Culture - we pride ourselves on the values of our mission. As we aspire to create our sanctuary we invite our members to be part of this vision and community.
Punctuality - to help us keep our class schedules running smoothly please ensure you arrive 5 minutes before your class is scheduled to start.
Class Structures
At The C Word we offer a selection of class structures. Currently available in person, with online classes coming soon.
-
Single teaser classes aimed to introduce elements of burlesque. No weekly commitment.
Skill workshops are built around developing specific techniques or improving skill foundations.
-
Weekly classes learning segments of choreography to create a full act. Often incorporating prop work and connection with the act narrative.
Our range includes: classic showgirl, bump & grind, neo-burlesque, silk fans, boas, parody, heels and twerk.
-
Solo tuition is available for those who don’t do well in a group environment, or are looking to develop a solo act. Covering choreography support, costume consultation, or skill development we work with your capabilities and goals to create the vision.
