[ The C Word]

Part social club, part dance school, The C Word is Townsville’s newest dance collective. Explore dance styles including Burlesque and Twerk, and connect with yourself through Performance and Movement. Fusing creative expression and empowered life learning, our instructors and facilitators are ready to welcome you to the fold.

Who Are We

  • Provide an inclusive community space to explore creative expression through the lens of Burlesque and compassionate self-discovery. We are commit to contributing an environment of growth and support for all our members. We acknowledge the history and communities within the Burlesque space, including the LGBTQIA+ and s/w communities, and their contributions to the art.

    1. Kindness - we have a zero tolerance policy towards bullying of any kind. 

    2. Respect - through honesty, communication and willing participation.

    3. Participation - classes are for dancing, leave drama at the door.

    4. Practice - instructors and choreographers are artists too, please respect their work by practicing between classes.

    5. Consent - remember consent is sexy, ask before touching.

    6. Community - we are more than a dance class; we build community through collaboration, not competition.

    7. Growth - we encourage curiosity, exploration and development .

    8. Safety - we are committed to safe dance practices through technical proficiency.   

    9. Support - we want our members to succeed. We build each other up and foster strengths. 

    • Communication - we encourage open communication with our instructors. We are committed to a supportive environment and want to hear your questions and concerns. 

    • Practice - We ask members to practice the weekly choreography outside of class to keep pace with the class. If a member is unable to attend a class, we ask that you utilise the rehearsal videos to catch up and keep pace with the class. 

    • Performing - we love to see the enthusiasm for our work and welcome students to attend as many courses as they want to. We aim to put together class watch parties twice per year and one major Showcase annually. Annual Showcases will be a selection of acts from the preceding twelve months, and those acts will be offered as 3 week Performance Intensives to polish and refine so our members shine their brightest. To support this members will be capped at 2 acts per showcase. Just because we can do the hard things, does not mean we have to suffer in hardship.

    • Culture - we pride ourselves on the values of our mission. As we aspire to create our sanctuary we invite our members to be part of this vision and community. 

    • Punctuality - to help us keep our class schedules running smoothly please ensure you arrive 5 minutes before your class is scheduled to start.
