The C Word Burlesque / Townsville Burlesque
Last updated: Sept 2026

The C Word Burlesque ("TCW", "we", "us" or "our") respects the privacy of our students, participants, instructors and other people who interact with us.

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store and protect personal information in connection with our dance and burlesque classes, workshops, performances, events, communications, website and related activities.

Where applicable, we handle personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).

1. What personal information do we collect?

The information we collect depends on how you interact with us. This may include:

Contact and enrolment information

  • name;

  • email address;

  • telephone number;

  • social media handle or username, where you choose to provide one;

  • enrolment and registration information;

  • class and workshop participation information;

  • attendance information; and

  • information contained in communications between you and TCW.

Emergency contact information

Where you provide an emergency contact, we may collect:

  • the emergency contact's name;

  • telephone number; and

  • other information you choose to provide that is reasonably necessary for contacting that person in an emergency.

Health and safety information

Where relevant to your participation, we may collect information about:

  • injuries;

  • medical conditions;

  • allergies;

  • physical limitations;

  • accessibility requirements; and

  • other health or safety information that may affect your participation.

Health information is considered sensitive information under Australian privacy law and is subject to additional protections. Where the Privacy Act applies, sensitive information generally requires consent to collect it.

You are not required to disclose information that is not relevant to your participation or safety. However, you are responsible for informing your instructor or facilitator of any relevant condition, injury or limitation that may reasonably affect your ability to participate safely.

Payment information

We may collect information necessary to process and administer payments, including:

  • billing information;

  • transaction details;

  • payment status;

  • invoices and receipts; and

  • records of purchases, bookings, refunds or cancellations.

Where payment is processed through a third-party payment provider, TCW may not receive or store your full payment card details.

Images and recordings

Photographs and video may be taken during classes, workshops, rehearsals, performances and events.

Where you can be identified, photographs and video may constitute personal information. The collection and use of identifiable images is addressed separately through our Media & Image Consent arrangements.

Your media preference does not form part of this Privacy Policy and is instead recorded through the media consent process provided during enrolment.

2. How do we collect personal information?

We generally collect personal information directly from you.

This may occur when you:

  • complete an enrolment or registration form;

  • register for a class or workshop;

  • communicate with us by email, telephone, social media or other messaging services;

  • make a payment or purchase;

  • provide emergency contact information;

  • provide health or safety information;

  • attend a class, workshop, performance or event;

  • provide feedback; or

  • communicate with us in connection with your participation.

We may also collect information through third-party services used to operate our business, such as online forms, payment systems, booking platforms, email services, cloud storage and social media platforms.

We aim to collect information that is reasonably necessary for our functions and activities.

3. Why do we collect and use personal information?

We may collect, hold and use personal information for purposes including:

  • processing enrolments and registrations;

  • administering classes, workshops and events;

  • communicating with participants;

  • managing attendance;

  • managing bookings, cancellations and refunds;

  • processing payments and maintaining financial records;

  • contacting your nominated emergency contact where reasonably necessary;

  • responding to an injury, illness, accident or emergency;

  • taking reasonable steps to support safe participation;

  • arranging performances, workshops and other activities;

  • providing information about classes, events and activities;

  • sending marketing or promotional communications where permitted;

  • managing our website, systems and administration;

  • improving our classes and services;

  • maintaining appropriate business records;

  • meeting legal, insurance or regulatory obligations; and

  • protecting the safety and security of participants, instructors, staff and visitors.

We will not use personal information for an unrelated purpose unless permitted or required by law or you have provided appropriate consent.

4. Health and safety information

We recognise that health information is particularly private and sensitive.

Where you provide health information to TCW, we will use that information only for purposes reasonably connected with your participation, safety or an emergency, including:

  • informing an instructor of a relevant condition or limitation;

  • making reasonable adjustments where appropriate;

  • responding to an injury or incident;

  • contacting emergency services or medical professionals where reasonably necessary; or

  • contacting your nominated emergency contact where appropriate.

Access to health information will be limited to people who reasonably need the information for these purposes, such as relevant instructors or authorised TCW administrators.

Health information will not be used for promotional purposes.

TCW is not a medical or healthcare provider and the collection of health information does not mean that TCW is responsible for assessing, diagnosing or treating any medical condition.

5. Emergency contacts

Emergency contact details are collected so that we can contact a person nominated by you where reasonably necessary for your safety or in the event of an injury, illness, accident or other emergency.

By providing another person's contact details, you confirm that you are authorised to provide that information to TCW for this purpose.

We will not use an emergency contact's information for marketing or unrelated purposes.

6. Photographs, video and media

Photography and video may occur during TCW classes, workshops, rehearsals, performances and events.

We recognise that photographs and video can be personal, particularly where they depict participation in burlesque or other performance activities.

Where you are identifiable, we will handle your image in accordance with the media preference you selected during enrolment.

Our Media & Image Consent arrangements provide the following choices:

Promotional and educational use

You may consent to identifiable photographs and video being used for both promotional and educational purposes.

Promotional use may include websites, social media, advertising, promotional materials and similar public-facing communications.

Educational use only

You may consent to identifiable photographs and video being used for educational purposes only, such as teaching resources or private student/instructor communications.

This does not authorise public promotional use.

No use

You may choose not to consent to TCW using identifiable photographs or video of you for promotional or educational purposes.

Your media preference is separate from your enrollment and does not affect your ability to participate in TCW classes or activities.

Further information about the scope of media consent, withdrawal of consent and the use of previously published material is provided in the Media & Image Consent section of the enrolment process.

7. Participant photography and social media

TCW participants may independently take photographs or video at classes and events.

Participants are expected to respect the privacy and boundaries of others.

Participants should not photograph, film, publish, tag or otherwise publicly identify another participant without that person's permission.

A person's attendance at a TCW class, workshop, performance or event does not, by itself, constitute permission for another participant to publish or otherwise share their image online.

TCW may request that content be removed where it has been published without appropriate permission.

8. Social media handles

We may ask you to provide a social media handle or username.

Providing a social media handle is optional unless expressly stated otherwise for a particular purpose.

Providing your social media handle does not, by itself, give TCW permission to publicly identify, tag, promote or otherwise associate you with TCW social media content.

Where you have separately provided media consent for promotional use, your social media handle may be used where reasonably necessary to identify or appropriately credit your account.

9. Disclosure of personal information

We may disclose personal information where reasonably necessary to operate TCW and provide our services.

Depending on the circumstances, this may include disclosure to:

  • TCW instructors and facilitators;

  • authorised TCW administrators;

  • contractors providing services to TCW;

  • venues where information is reasonably necessary for an event or safety purpose;

  • payment providers;

  • booking or enrolment providers;

  • accounting or bookkeeping providers;

  • website, email, cloud-storage and technology providers;

  • insurers or professional advisers;

  • emergency services or medical professionals where reasonably necessary; and

  • government, regulatory or law-enforcement bodies where required or authorised by law.

We will not sell your personal information.

We will not disclose your personal information to another person or organisation for their own marketing purposes unless you have provided appropriate consent or disclosure is otherwise permitted by law.

10. Third-party services

TCW may use third-party providers to help operate our business.

These may include providers of:

  • online forms and enrolment systems;

  • payment processing;

  • booking and scheduling;

  • accounting;

  • email and communications;

  • cloud storage;

  • website hosting;

  • analytics;

  • social media; and

  • other business administration services.

These providers may process or store personal information on our behalf and may have their own privacy policies.

Some providers may store or process information outside Australia.

Where required by applicable privacy law, TCW will take reasonable steps in relation to overseas disclosure of personal information.

11. Google Forms and online information

Our enrolment and registration processes may use Google Forms and related Google services.

Information submitted through an online form may be stored electronically and accessed by authorised TCW administrators for legitimate business purposes.

Google may process or store information in accordance with its own terms and privacy policies, including in locations outside Australia.

Participants should avoid entering information into free-text fields that is not relevant to the question being asked, particularly sensitive or highly personal information.

12. Direct marketing

We may contact you with information about:

  • upcoming classes;

  • workshops;

  • performances;

  • events;

  • changes to our services; and

  • other TCW activities.

Where required by law, we will obtain appropriate consent for direct marketing.

You may opt out of promotional communications at any time by using the unsubscribe function provided or contacting us.

Opting out of marketing communications will not prevent us from sending essential communications relating to your enrolment, bookings, payments, classes, safety or other services you have requested.

13. How we store and protect personal information

We take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference, loss, unauthorised access, modification or disclosure.

Depending on the nature of the information, security measures may include:

  • password-protected systems;

  • restricted access;

  • secure online services;

  • appropriate account permissions;

  • physical security of paper records; and

  • procedures for securely deleting or destroying information when it is no longer required.

No method of electronic storage or transmission can be guaranteed to be completely secure.

If we become aware of a suspected or actual data breach, we will take reasonable steps to assess, contain and respond to the incident and comply with any applicable legal obligations.

14. How long do we keep personal information?

We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes for which it was collected, or where retention is required by law, insurance requirements or other legitimate business purposes.

Different types of information may be retained for different periods.

For example, financial and transaction records may need to be retained for longer than ordinary class administration information.

When personal information is no longer required, we will take reasonable steps to securely delete, destroy or de-identify it.

15. Accessing your personal information

You may request access to personal information that TCW holds about you.

You may also ask us to correct personal information if you believe it is inaccurate, incomplete or out of date.

Requests should be made using the contact details below.

We may need to verify your identity before providing access to or changing personal information.

In some circumstances, applicable privacy law may allow or require us to refuse access. If this occurs, we will provide an explanation where we are legally permitted to do so.

16. Changing or withdrawing consent

Where we rely on your consent to collect, use or disclose personal information, you may withdraw that consent by contacting us, subject to any legal or practical limitations.

Withdrawing consent does not affect the lawfulness of any use or disclosure that occurred before consent was withdrawn.

In relation to photographs and video, withdrawal of media consent applies to future use where reasonably practicable. It does not necessarily require TCW to recall or destroy material that has already been printed, distributed, published or copied by third parties.

We will consider reasonable requests to remove digital material that remains under our control.

17. Privacy complaints

If you have a concern about how TCW has handled your personal information, please contact us first so that we can investigate and attempt to resolve the matter.
